Recently, an exquisite exhibit of Picasso Sculpture opened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
Last week I perused the stellar exhibit. Although Picasso is most famously known as a painter, his sculptures included some of the most innovative and revolutionary art of the era.
Being a member I was able to sneak in at 9:30am and the museum was relatively empty until a UN delegation stampede occurred, blocking all access. Fortunately, I was on my way out.
A picture says a 1,000 words so I am going to allow Picasso’s work to speak for itself.
The show is broken down into periods. The first being Early Works and the First Cubist Sculptures 1902-1909.
Fortunately, I have had the pleasure of viewing many of the sculptures at the newly renovated Picasso Museum in Paris as well as the small Picasso Museum in Antibes, France.
The second room features Sculpture From the Cubist Years 1912-1915.
Moving onward to the Monument to Apollinaire 1927-1931.
My favorite room is the Boisgeloup Sculpture Studio 1930-32.
This flowed into the Boisgeloup Sculpture 1933-1937.
Another fabulous display was in the War Years 1939-1945.
Flowing into Vallauris Ceramics and Assemblages 1945-1953
The second to last room represents Valllauris and Cannes Assemblages 1952-1958
Closing it out is the Sheet Metal Sculptures 1954-1964
The Picasso Sculpture Exhibit is stunning. Don’t miss out. This remarkable show is on until February 7th, 2016.
