Nonfootball Sundays…

Now that football season is a wrap, Sundays are wide open.

Beach forays are still several months away.

Winter weather beckons cultural pursuits.

Last Sunday, after a long walk in 20 degree weather and Finnley’s annual WellCare check up, we walked to Times Square to take in the hit Broadway show, Appropriate.

The stellar cast, including the outstanding Sarah Paulson, Corey Stoll and Elle Fanning, mesmerized the soldout audience for over 21/2 hours.

Appropriate is a realistic American drama focusing in on universal family issues involving family ties, destructive relationships and past hurts surrounding legacy, race and money…issues we all can relate to.

After a stimulating Broadway experience we enjoyed an after theater dinner at a wonderful new sushi handroll place only three blocks from the theater.

First World problems, but finding a good restaurant in the Times Square area is challenging.

I did a deep dive and perused a minimum of 50 places which were either touristy, expensive, food from countries I’m not interested in ingesting, meat centric or I’m just not that into it.

Mari.ne is a 15-seat, intimate, bright white sushi bar offering high quality handrolls at great prices.

You can order handroll sets (4 for $22, 5 for $27) or select your own individual combinations, featuring sweet uni, salmon roe, caviar and fatty tuna and Waygu. Vegan rolls are an additional option.

They offer interesting sakes, soju and beers. My husband ordered a Korean unfiltered rice beer that was delicious

Korean Chef Chef Sunchul Shim, celebrated for earning a Michelin star at both his skewer restaurant, Kochi, and his handroll restaurant, Mari, honed his skills in esteemed New York City Michelin Star restaurants Le Bernardin and Per Se.

No football, but we savored a winning Sunday chock full of entertainment, fabulosity, shared family fun and tasty morsels.

Mari.ne is open daily from 11:30am to 9pm and is located at 135 West 41st Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue.
