The hook grabs you and I’m in the pocket.

I am talkin’ about the hit single, Marvin Gaye. I am loving Charlie Puth. What a talented cutie. While he was making magic, he threw Meghan Trainor into the mix and BAM…a hit single.

Backstory: Charlie Puth is an American singer, songwriter and record producer from New Jersey.  He gained popularity through his musical videos on YouTube.

Most recently, he is best known for writing and singing on Wiz Khalifa’s single, See You Again from the Furious 7 soundtrack. The song is a huge success, peaking at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. He also has been working with Jason Derulo, Trey Songz and Lil Wayne.

The 23-year-old singer first became noticed nationally in 2011 thanks to a popular cover of Adele’s, Someone Like You, that landed him a pair of appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

For me, the single, Marvin Gaye, evokes real feelings.

In a Billboard interview, Puth said “I listened to a lot of Marvin Gaye and Motown Records. When I was making my record, I just wanted to make this soulful sound. When Marvin Gaye made his music, he evoked this feeling that would reach everybody.”

Puth graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He actually lived in John Mayer’s old dorm room and and when their paths crossed on campus, Mayer offered advise about never giving up on his dreams.

Charlie also grew up with Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi as neighbors…he is surrounded by great rock karma.

Puth majored in music production and engineering at Berklee, but claims to write all the music in his bedroom on a laptop.

Puth describes his own style as a mix of One Direction pop and basic hip-hop. While in sixth grade, he recorded and burned copies of his own holiday CD and made about $600 selling it door-to-door.

Puth is living the dream…writing and producing great songs, possessing true talent. In his early 20’s, he now has 2 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list.

Charlie makes me want to revisit the good old days of the music biz.

Take my  advice…get it on and listen to Charlie Puth.
