I had doubts about visiting Ferris, a new trending restaurant in NoMad’s Made Hotel.
The word of mouth was very good, but I was not a big fan of Chef Greg Proechel last restaurant, Le Turtle…it suffered from trying to hard.
I succumbed and arrived early.
It was actually a good thing.
Our table was not ready and the engaging and outgoing general manager, Jenny Lakin, suggested we have a drink at the Good Behavior rooftop bar in the Made Hotel, where Ferris is situated below street level.
The intimate bar, located on the 18th floor, has a breathtaking view of the Empire State Building and surrounding high-rises.
We had a delightful Prosecco and took in the view.
Jenny texted us and we headed downstairs.
There was still a bit of a wait and we were offered a lovely aperitif.
We were seated and the guys to our left were quick with recommendations.
We kicked things off with an enticing Bread course. The butter was off the charts ($5).
Next was an absolutely delicious Grilled Squid in a fabulous broth adorned with delicious blood oranges ($13).
The Boy Choy was highly recommended. I did like the preparation, but there was a spice that did not sit well afterwards. It left a gritty aftertaste ($13).
The Okinawa Sweet Potato was so unusual and absolutely delectable with pumpkin mustard and buttermilk. ($15).
The scrumptious Forbidden Rice special had warm black rice on the bottom layered with vegetables ($24).
We had forgotten we had ordered the Charred Broccolini with timur yogurt, grapes and cashew which was wonderful, but we were satiated ($15)
The eclectic, new American seasonal fare was very good and the price point quite reasonable.
Ferris is cozy (40 seats) and friendly and I can unabashedly say it is worth a visit.
Go early or stay late, but make sure to have a drink on the 18th floor at the rooftop Good Behavior bar.
The combo is intoxicating.
