Reasonable Chinese Sibling Debuts
Decent restaurants are few and far between in the high rent culinary wasteland better known as the upper west side.
Recently, a Chinatown Cantonese and dim sum institution opened uptown.
Jing Fong has been downtown since 1978. It is a 20,000 square food dim sum palace, seating 800.
The newest addition is located on Amsterdam and 78th Street.
It is small yet attractive.
There are no dim sum carts uptown, but there is a 10-seat Chef’s Counter where diners can overlook chefs creating the bao and dumplings.
We both ordered imported beers that fit the bill of thirst quenching on a very warm October evening.
We kicked things off with a bounty of fabulous Sauteed String Beans in a delicious sauce ($8).
Soon after our order of Crispy Shrimp and Chive Dumplings arrived. They were hot, crispy and tasty ($8).
We followed the crispy dumplings with steamed Crab, Shrimp and Spinach Dumplings which were tender and moist ($8).
We rounded the meal off with a wonderful Salt & Pepper Squid with sauteed onions and scallions ($11).
Service is prompt and prices are very reasonable.
Jing Fong is a great addition to the UWS.
Jing Fong 380 Amsterdam Avenue and 78th Street. Open daily 11am-10pm. No reservations.
