The Costume Institute’s 2023 exhibition is all about Karl.
The stunning exhibit examines Lagerfeld’s work (1933–2019), focusing on the designer’s stylistic designs and aesthetic themes that appear time and again in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.
Lagerfeld’s fluid lines united his designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld, creating a diverse and prolific body of work.
Take the tour of approximately 150 pieces and check out his outrageous history of fabulous coats:
There are nine different groupings: the masculine/feminine lines giving way to the romantic/military influences, which give way to the rococo/classical, which in turn lead to the historical/futuristic and so on.
My advise…just stroll and take in the creative clothing.
In a perfect world I can admire his talent. I might even fantasize about strolling the streets of New York City in one of Lagerfeld’s fantastic coats, but I can not condone a man who was fatphobic, racist and sexist.
