Good things do come in small packages.
Take Quique Crudo.
An extremely intimate restaurant in the West Village, the food at Quique is outstanding, the staff friendly and informative, especially Chef/Owner Cosme Aguilar who also owns Casa Enrique.
In 2015, Casa Enrique became the first Mexican restaurant in New York to earn a Michelin star.
This walk-in-only Mexican predominantly seafood restaurant is less of a restaurant and more of a secret hideaway.
On one side, cooks and bartenders whip up more than 25 different house cocktails and plate tantalizing razor clams, scallops and lobster and on the other side people hop on 20 or so stools, packed in like sardines and devour fabulosity.
Space is limited, but the array of food offerings is not.
We toasted the evening with a terrific Pisco Sour ($16) and a glass of Materia Prima Orange, a Spanish pale amber orange wine produced entirely from biodynamically grown Xarel-lo, a Spanish white grape variety blended along with Sauvignon Blanc ($18).
Our journey commenced with a truly delicious Ensalada Cesarin prepared with Baby Gem Lettuce, Panko and mounds of Parmesan Cheese topped with Boquerones/Anchovies ($22).
The salad was followed by phenomenal Aguachile Verde de Navajos which are Razor Clams. I adore and consume them with great frequency in France. Razor Clams are not a recurring menu item in America. These were delicious Cape Cod Razor Clams, prepared with Cucumber, Lime, Red Onion, Cilantro, Serrano Chili and Avocado ($25).
The party continued with fresh sweet raw Nantucket Scallops, a special offering that night in a delightful sauce ($25).
The Ceviche De Langosta was divine. It is a bit pricey, but totally worth the $65 price tag. The sauce alone is worth ordering it. The dish is comprised of a whole Maine Lobster, Coconut Milk, Ginger, Salsa Macha, Lemongrass, Cilantro, Cucumber, Red Onion and Lobster Stock.
The final main course selection was a savory, rich Bone Marrow special the night I dined at Quique served with crispy toast points ($27).
The meal ended with the most amazing homemade Cheese Ice Cream Special…outrageously creamy with a uniquely divine flavor ($16).
Chef Cosme Aguilar is charming and very accommodating. I was concerned that the dishes would be too spicy for me as I am a spice pussy. He personally guided me and even brought over sauces from different menu items for me to sample.
Including the aforementioned items, the menu also includes Guacamole to compliment the plethora of cocktails, raw and fried Oysters, Crab Tostada, Steak Tartare, Shrimp, Chicken and Fluke Crudo.
Quique Crudo is a special, intimate refuge with creatively awesome and enticing fresh seafood.
