Yucky Yakitori…NYC Restaurant Review

Dining before theater is always a challenge.

The Time Square area is not a dining mecca.

Torishin has always been on my radar screen.

Toriis a Michelin star restaurant. I have never indulged because it features chicken and meat skewers and my husband is a pescatarian.

Torishin is the first authentic Japanese Yakitori restaurant that received a Michelin Star in the United States as well as three stars from the New York Times…were the reviewers drunk on sake?!

I recently went to the theater with my daughter so we decided to try it.

The ambiance is nonexistent, the welcome tepid.

We ended up at the a la carte Sake bar with a very accommodating server, but everything was horrible.

Half the meal was returned.

We started with mediocre Chicken Yakitori.  How can this be a featured item?! Fresh Direct offers tastier chicken ($5.50). Also pictured are the Yam and Shiitake Mushroom Skewers.

The Fried Tofu with Bonita was tasty so we reordered because not much was resonating. By 6:30 the Bonita was finished and we were served a limp bite of tofu ($5.50), pictured with the Quail Egg Skewer.

The Pork Belly skewer was so tough that it went back.

.
The Edamame was soggy and over steamed. Buh bye.

The Yam Potato was fair ($7)

The Shiitake Mushroom Skewer was as exciting as Donny Junior ($6).

The Quail Egg terrible ($5.50).

The Crispy Skin Chicken was crispy, but tasteless ($6).

The Sparkling Sake definitely enhanced the dismal dinner.

In addition to the a la carte menu, there is a chef’s Omakase Menu comprised of 15 courses for $190 and another featuring 14 courses for $160.

Theater was entertaining, dinner was an expensive flop.

The company was superb.

I may just cook before theater from now on or reserve for an enticing after theater meal outside the mediocrity of restaurants in the Broadway zone.

Torishin 362 West 53rd St. New York. Open Tuesday-Sunday 5-10pm. Reservations on Resy.
