Yet another curve ball thrown at women.
I don’t know if I have been existing in a cave, but i just learned about the Glass Cliff.
The term “glass cliff” refers to a situation in which women are promoted to higher positions during times of crisis or duress, or during a recession when the chance of failure is more likely.
Simply put, women in these situations are set up for failure.
Such a lovely concept.
I am guessing that the round table of most likely middle aged white guys dreamed up this strategy while gorging themselves on rare steaks and fries with goblets filled to the brim with adult beverages. Cigars and brandy or an aged whiskey to follow while they select geographically desirable cliffs to push innocent female victims off.
Let me break this down. Women are thrown a CEO bone, basically set up to, yet again, sacrifice their bodies for men, along with their personal rights to decide what they can or cannot do with their own bodies.
Did I fall off a cliff and hit my head? What century are we living in? All these male manipulations are stunningly archaic.
Starbucks has recently failed mightily. The CEO who has held the position for less than a year was just disposed of and the male savior of Chipotle has taken over. No personal attacks on Laxman Narasimhan about the Starbucks upheaval just the fact that the stock has dropped 20% and sales had decline precipitously.
If a Ms. followed CEO, she would be personally maligned.
Interesting to note that former Starbucks CEO also gained a reputation for prioritizing work-life balance, highlighting his practice of not working past 6 pm.
I am projecting that if the Starbucks CEO was a woman the media would jump all over the fact that she left at 6pm every day to manage her family, proving that females cannot prioritize their job.
Companies may offer glass cliff positions to women because they consider women more expendable and better scapegoats.
if the woman succeeds, the company is better off. If she fails, the company is no worse off, she can be blamed, the company gets credit for having been egalitarian and progressive and can return to its prior practice of appointing men.
Give ‘em hell, Kamala. Time to turn the tables and show men how it’s done and a gentle shove off a cliff will not be frowned upon.
