Surf’s Up…

Ocean view…waves crashing, sun setting over the Malibu shoreline.

Enviable surroundings and the food was actually very good.

Last week, we dined at Mastro’s Ocean Club on the Pacific Coast Highway.

The decor is old school with low ceilings, close quarters, but the ocean swells created a tranquil ambiance.

We hung at the bar for a bit, awaiting our ocean view table.

Live music accompanied our cocktails.

The Chopin martini was cold and neat.

At first I had sticker shock.

Chopin upped the ante by $2. The martini had a $20 price tag, but the shaker contained enough for another full hit so it ended up being two for the price of one.

David indulged in a house specialty, Double Cross Mule ($16).

Wedge Salad

Seated and wooed by the view we shared a truly delicious Wedge Salad ($12).

I don’t know if iceberg lettuce has taken a dive, but wedges have been as annoying as my thong wedgies.

This wedge contained fresh, crunchy lettuce, crispy bacon, sweet tomatoes and tasty crumbled blue cheese dressing.

We finished our cocktails with fresh hamachi sashimi embellished with crispy onions and topped with ponzu truffle oil ($26).

Lobster Mashed Potatoes were a must and they did not disappoint…hello, gorgeous!

The portion size was huge and there was a generous amount of tantalizing lobster meat ($35).

We adorned our fresh Pacific Swordfish with dollops of lobster mash. The fish was prepared perfectly. We shared the hearty portion. ($40).

We also ordered asparagus, but they were overcooked and the waiter returned them, no problem.

Service was efficient, but without a personal touch.

I am a water person so the appeal of an oceanside meal is very attractive to me.

I am glad we came, saw and conquered…not sure there will be an encore as the prices are high and the interior vibe not my thing.

That being said, without hesitation, I would definitely recommend dining at least once at the classic Mastro Ocean Club.
