Strut Your Stuff…

Life is a runway so make an impact.

Most of my life I have been intrigued by fashion.

I confess to devouring trends IF they work for my body type.

I think cropped tops work well on those who have a fit middle and I am all about age appropriate dressing.

I remember Queen E.’s friend always wore teenage trends when she was over 60.  That’s a fashion no no.

I frequently go through my closet and weed out things that appear out of style. When I owned a home storage was never a problem.

With limited closet space in NYC I am ruthless.

Every few years I want to kick myself for giving away those fabulous Prada square toe loafers, Gucci bags with bamboo wood handles, Karl Lagerfeld chandelier earrings, an abundance of 80’s shoulder pad suits, my skinny jeans, cashmere boyfriend sweaters because they all come back in style at a much higher price point and not made as well as the original.

There is no judgement here in wearing what you like and are comfortable in except jeans.

Right now I am torn. Barrel jeans and wide leg jeans are very in.

I can get behind a wide leg, but not the ones that can hide a posse of small children. I do not get the barrel jeans which look like clown pants to me.

Is skinny in or just straight, are boot cut cool or out?

I am awaiting my wide leg cuffed jean from The Gap.

I shudder at the price tags on Frame, Khaite, Citizens of Humanity, Nili Lotan, Bottega, Alaïa, Loewe, Rag & Bone, Ulla Johnson and Acne jeans.

I must confess to being a Gap girl. Not for the price, but the fit.

So many styles, so little time to enjoy my baggy low rise bell bottom boyfriend jeans because the newest look is just around the corner.

I long for the flowered and stripped Landlubber hip hugger jeans of my youth. Just throw on Doc Marten boots and I was ready to take on the world.

If there was free, not alternate side of the street parking in Manhattan I would buy a cute little caravan and store all my ever changing wardrobe close to home.

Recently, we did a minor renovation and afterwards I pulled out all the under the bed, behind the mirror, ceiling storage bins and discovered 11 down jackets that I had no idea I owned. Every winter I could never find my coats. I had visions of a full length Canada Goose down coat. The coat existed it was just buried away.

I spent the entire frigid winter wearing the same Uniglo down jacket…who knew. The up side is I feel as if I have an entirely new winter coat entourage.   I unearthed a Max Mara Teddy coat, a fabulous JCrew full length plaid coat, two fur coats, two velvet coats, and a mink vest, to name a few

I miss the good old days when my September issue of Seventeen Magazine would be delivered at the end of August. Queen E. and I would sit down at the kitchen table and spend hours eyeballing every page. I would even cut out pictures of outfits I had to have.

Luckily, my mom was a co-conspirator and she would always bring my Look Book to our biannual trek to my Uncle George’s clothing boutique located on Main Street in Northampton Massachusetts, right next to the Smith College campus.

My uncle had the best selection of Lady Bug, Lanz, Villager and all the trends including short plastic raincoats, colourful swing coats, bubble dresses, helmet-like hats, and dyed fake-furs, preppy and refined silhouettes and a smattering of Twiggy influenced items.

Fashion is always a great distraction and even Amazon has upped their game.

My online shopper extraordinaire and eagle-eye daughter just found me a rad pair of Amazon jeans for $35.

Rock on and make the sidewalks of any city your personal runway.
