I am a publicist so I am naturally a spin doctor.
Once I pocket the cell and turn off the hype, spinning my wheels and earning the burn becomes my addiction.
I really don’t enjoy fitness classes where you are jumping around. I am too old for Jane Fonda type of exercising although I would give up just about everything except my eyesight and NY Giants season tickets to look as good as Jane Fonda does.
I need to get her plastic surgeon’s name.
Fast forward to reality. I am back in the saddle again. Thanks to my amazingly creative and generous gift giving daughter, I have activated her Christmas present of a membership to ClassPass.
ClassPass is a monthly membership to the best boutique fitness classes. There are a plethora of classes available including cycling, pilates, yoga, strength training, dance and martial arts.
Monday, Courtny and I took a spinning class at Flywheel Sports in West Hollywood. Beyond the effort to get from Pacific Palisades to West Hollywood in the morning, the experience was stellar.
For a long time I have wanted to sample Flywheel, partially because a former NY Giants player, Tiki Barber, was a partner until his extra martial affair was exposed and then the former Giants running back had to take a hike.
I was also interested because I have never been a huge fan of Soul Cycle.
Flywheel rocks. Our instructor, Kari, played great music and presented a solid, challenging 45 minute workout.
Small perks make the experience very positive. They have water, clean bathrooms, free towels and dimly lit cycle rooms which make for a cooler and more welcoming environment.
Until the ridiculously expensive Equinox, the bikes are all in good shape and have comfortable spacing. At Soul Cycle your neighbor’s butt is literally in your face and the temperature is way too hot for anyone, especially a menopausal momma.
Spinning or exercise in general is not only great for your health, but it saves on therapist bills and sitting around talking about yourself.
I much prefer to actually spin on a bike rather than spin a tale about a tortured childhood, lost lovers or eating my feelings…how boring.
Get your butt off the couch and into the saddle. We all have the potential to be spin doctors.

I just joined Class Pass and as a SPINNING instructor who really doesn’t do much else exercise wise any more, this is the best thing EVER!!! I love going to different studios, meeting new people and challenging myself in new and exciting ways. I just tried FlyWheel last weekend and it was a blast! Here’s to Class Pass and staying healthy and active. I’m over 40 so I hope to keep it moving for a LONG time.
Thanks so much for your comment. It sounds as if we had similar Flywheel experiences and are both big fans of ClassPass. Keep spinning. I hope to be like this at 90…join me!
You have to try Peloton! It would look gorgeous in your new home. You will get the best workout ever, whenever you want and in whatever duds you happen to throw on when you roll out of bed!
Also, keep me posted on ClassPass. I had a friend who did not like it because she said she could not get into the classes that she wanted. She ended her membership. Maybe it works if you can be flexible? I know Unplug takes ClassPass. I’m sure you would write an entertaining blog about paying to meditate… But I will come clean, I do like to indulge from time to time (it’ so LA, but I’m right there!).
