New York City has always been a stage, a place where dreams teeter on the edge of triumph and heartbreak.
It’s a city that breathes ambition, where talent collides with opportunity and reinvention is just another part of survival.
In many ways, the 2012 Broadway-inspired TV drama Smash was more than just a show about creating a musical.
Smash was a love letter to NYC’s relentless pursuit of greatness, wrapped in the drama, glamour and grind that defines life here.
I am constantly in relentless pursuit of new experiences.
I recently attended a performance of Smash, the musical inspired by the TV show which opened in previews on Broadway last week.
It is a fun ride…a traditional Broadway musical with juice.
We sat first row and perhaps it presented too much information. It was interesting to be part of the show, but the closeness took some of the mystery and sparkle away.
The costumes by Alejo Vietti were tacky. I think he hates women. There are some plus size women in the cast and the fit was abominable.
The Smash backstory is the journey of bringing Bombshell, a Marilyn Monroe musical, to Broadway. It is filled with talent, competition and behind-the-scenes chaos.
The characters mirror the real struggle of artists in NYC. Just like the city itself, the show is a study in contrasts of brilliance and failure, cutthroat ambition and quiet moments of vulnerability.
I recommend Smash if you don’t have to pay full price. The show is scheduled to run through August 31st.
My daughter and I enjoyed a great evening along with a very disappointing dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant (review to follow).
Wake up every day in New York City and Smash your ambition out of the park…start spreading the news.
