Good pizza is tough to find in Los Angeles.
Spoken like a true New Yorker who can grab a great slice around the corner from home in NYC.
Our only nearby alternative in west LA is a sad, dried out, oregano laden Domino’s…we order only in times of utter desperation.
While living in Coronaville I am always on the lookout for a fabulous curbside takeout.
After a beach excursion last Saturday we headed to West Hollywood, placing an online order before hitting the highway.
La Morra is a new pizza place on West 3rd Street.
The curbside pick up window makes things quick and easy.
There are numerous appealing choices and we went white for our first foray.
The team of Zach Swemle and Marlee Blodgett met in 2013 at NYC’s Mission Cantina where Swemle was executive chef and Blodgett was part of the front of the house team.
Pizza was part of the attraction.
Marlee had a long history with pizza through her father’s 20 year tenure with California Pizza Kitchen and Zach had spent his early 20s in San Francisco, cooking and refining his pizza skills as sous chef at Pizzeria Delfina.
It was meant to be.
They spent time in Italy and then earned their reputation in Charleston, South Carolina developing a recipe for a naturally leavened dough.
In 2016, Zach built a mobile wood-fired pizza oven from the bed of his trailer, even finishing tiles by hand.
They put it all together and moved to Los Angeles in 2017.
We ordered the Funghi pizza with oyster mushroom, fontina, shallot, parsley, chili, panna and olive oil ($20).
Our other selection was the Patate with Yukon golds, raclette, rosemary, panna, black pepper and parmigiano ($20).
The Neopolitan pizzas are light and flavorful and the bubbly, airy, just-charred crust is fabulous.
They have a few cute tables outside so we sat and feasted as no one was around.
One pizza and a salad definitely feeds two, but sampling is so much fun.
There are seven other red pizza choices along with a Vegan Pepperoni.
I really enjoyed the Little Gem Caesar. The lettuce was crisp the Parmesan delish, crinchy homemade croutons and the Caesar dressing excellent ($10.50).
For a delightful gourmet pizza and a tantalizing salad definitely try La Morra and take some outstanding frozen pizzas and noteworthy products home.
