On The Waterfront…NY Area Restaurant Review

The staycations keep on coming.

Last weekend we took to the highway early and set out for picturesque Irvington, New York.

It was a quick 40 minute traffic free sojourn.

We hit up the farmers market in the center of town.

The prices were high, but we found some great fresh corn ($1 each) and organic white peaches ($5lb).

There was a cool indie band playing under a clear blue sky with a view of the Hudson River in the distance.

We strolled Main Street and then headed downhill all the way to the river to indulge in a delicious lunch at The Red Hat on the River.

Situated in a restored 100 year-old factory and seating 120 indoors the restaurant also features a gorgeous outdoor area nestled on the Hudson River riverfront.

The setting is glorious.

We had the nicest Argentine server.

We toasted the day with a delightful Italian orange wine ($15).

Our first course was a delectable Burrata Salad with honey and garlic marinated Cherry Tomatoes on a toasted, crunchy peasant bread ($23).

We then delighted in a bowl of Canadian Mussels in a rich wine white, garlic, butter and herb sauce accompanied by a generous portion of crispy French fries  ($32).

The desire to linger led us down a path of temptation so we ordered a light and flavorful Lemon Ricotta Cake with blueberry compote and a rich, heavy whipped cream ($13) along with a strong cup of coffee ($5).

I have to say I was very happily surprised with the quality of the cuisine. Sometimes a restaurant with a remarkable view will not serve equally deserving cuisine. The price points are definitely analogous to NYC pricing, but the food is delectable.

We headed back uphill crossing over the train tracks and made it home in under 40 minutes.

A getaway less than one hour outside of Manhattan offering a delightful break from the big city is very appealing and convenient.
