A new star is born in Bev Hills.
The Waldorf Astoria hotel, the $200 million dollar baby, has officially debuted in Los Angeles.
I predict it will become the new ‘it’ place to hang along with the classic Chateau Marmont and the Hollywood Tower.
The Waldorf will definitely steal the thunder from the neighboring Sultan of Brunei’s, Beverly Hills Hotel and The Peninsula Beverly Hills.
Renown restauranteur, Jean George Vongerichten, has made his first LA foray.
The crown jewel, the formal, fancy pants Jean George restaurant, is just to the left of the regal Waldorf Astoria lobby.
I chose the casual rooftop eatery with the amazing 360 degree view which is worth the price of admission.
the Waldorf has 170 rooms (119 “deluxe” rooms and 51 suites), all offering floor-to-ceiling windows, expansive decks and views.
Luxury comes at a high price with rooms ranging from $815 up to $20,000 for the presidential suite.
Our reservation was 1:45pm and we arrived early. We sat and took in the view of the Pacific Ocean, Hollywood sign, Beverly Hills, downtown LA and Westwood.
Rich people sure like to bitch.
The host was brow beaten when the wait exceeded 10 minutes and the pinkies up crew who showed up without reservations were abhorrent…we were highly amused as we sipped a lovely Cremant ($18).
Our table provided a fab view as did just about every single seat.
Our server, Jay, was a very nice chap who, in the real world, is a dancer.
We kicked off lunch with a refreshing Watermelon and Goat Cheese plate with Olive Oil and Cracked White Pepper.
It is a Jean George signature dish which we have often ordered at his restaurant at Columbus Circle…it is actually in Trump Tower at Columbus Circle, but I hate to give that putz a shout-out.
The server brought over a tasty Olive Tapenade with crispy crackers and breadsticks.
I ordered a Caesar Salad which was a very generous portion and dressed perfectly with absolutely delicious dressing.
I ordered a side of grilled salmon filet (Caesar $18, salmon $12).
Unfortunately, it arrived with grilled shrimp which looked great. I had to wait for the salmon which was wonderful. Our server felt so badly he comped us the fish.
David ordered a fabulous Lobster Burger with Green Chili Dressing, Yuzu Pickles, and Gruyere Cheese. The burger contains a generous serving of delicious lobster ($32).
We passed on dessert.
Nevertheless, Jay brought us scrumptious rosemary lemon butter cookies to complete the meal.
The Rooftop at JG is visually exciting.
Have a drink at the open air bar if dining isn’t a priority.
The Rooftop is aesthetically pleasing, as well, offering a calm, tranquil atmosphere in the middle of Bev Hills…I am not minimizing the food which is very good, but the view is absolutely tantalizing.
Rooftop by JG at the Waldorf Astoria 9850 Wilshire Boulevard Beverly Hills, California. Located at the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard. Open 11am-11pm. Reservations on OpenTable.com. Valet parking and street parking on Santa Monica Blvd.
