Not That Jewish.

Breaking News: Not That Jewish is Broadway Bound.

Over the years, many have said that to me and I always wondered what that meant.  Now there is a fabulous, hysterically funny and poignant performance piece that explains it all to adoring audiences.

Here’s how I came to, Not That Jewish…bear with me.

I have previously commented that Cafe Vida in my new hometown of Pacific Palisades is my plutonic Tinder. I have met the coolest, most interesting people there.

When we moved to the Palisades in September we were eating breakfast at Cafe Vida and happened to sit next to a very engaging couple, Ronda Spinak and Alan Duncan Ross.

We traded resumes and Ronda mentioned that she created Jewish Women’s Theater At-Homes Salon Theatre Series, now in its seventh season. She is an accomplished producer. We exchanged emails. Being a theater lover, I was very interested in attending one of the shows.

Encore performance…Sunday morning we ran into each other at Cafe Vida. Ronda generously invited us to the performance of, Not That Jewish that night at their new performance and art space, The Braid in Santa Monica.

Jewish Women’s Theatre gives voice to Jewish women in America by developing original artistic works which have been performed to sold-out audiences in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

Not That Jewish is a hilarious autobiographical one-woman show starring the talented, engaging Monica Piper.

Piper studied improv with Second City in Chicago and then, going solo, she became one of Showtime’s Comedy All-Stars and landed her own Ace Award-winning special, “No Monica…Just You.”

After being nominated for an American Comedy Award as one of the top five female comedians in the country, Monica Piper went on to write for Roseanne Barr on the mega hit series, Roseanne.

She also wrote for Mad About You, Veronica’s Closet, and won an Emmy for the #1 children’s animated series, Rugrats. Piper also developed and wrote series for Nickelodeon, Disney, and Cartoon Network.

Not That Jewish has a universal theme and is extremely relatable…being Jewish is definitely not a prerequisite. You just have to be human. Piper deals with wide ranging topic as diverse as Mickey Mantle, Alzheimer, adoption of her son and family.

One of Monica’s stchicks is regarding her neighbor whose dog was named Get off the f-ing couch. “And isn’t that a coincidence,” she says. “Her husband was named that, too.”

My advise…get off the f-ing couch and go this this talented, engaging woman whose humor and bravado even makes chopped liver funny.

Not That Jewish which has been playing for more than one year to sold-out audiences, has been extended at least through December, 2015.
