Moving Marine Mammal Moment…

Lately, I find humans overrated.

I won’t bore you with the details except to say the masses are angry, aggressive and unsmiling whether on the roads, sidewalks, on airplanes, in restaurants, pontificating on political platforms, even in the theater.

My preferred posse is animal based.

I have a newfound love affair with elephants.

Check out the Oscar-winning short film on Netflix, The Elephant Whisperers. It is 40 minutes of your life that you will not want back. It’s touching and beautifully shot.

Saturday, I had an unplanned encounter with a Sea Lion.

I was reading on an empty beach in Malibu. I looked up to see several Marine Mammal Rescue volunteers magically appear, transporting 5 heavy kennels and placing them side by side near the shoreline.

Next, a small group of humans followed and lined up on either side of the cages.

Curiosity piqued, I joined the looky-loos.

The leader of the pack explained that five very sick, malnourished sea lions had been rescued and rehabilitated.

Saturday was their jubilant return to the ocean.

We were instructed to leave a wide path so when the sea lions were released their view would be of the ocean and, hopefully, they would all waddle back to their home of origin.

Several people crossed the line because the desire for selfies overrode the animals best interests.

Once the irascible humans were corralled the countdown began and 4 out of the 5 sea lions happily headed into the beckoning water.

We were told that they may go rogue and if that happened to head uphill on the beach.

One sea lion was hesitant, headed towards the people and then made a quick left, scooting on all fours into the water.

Once ensconced in the ocean, we were given permission to celebrate. Clapping ensued and the return was deemed a huge success.

The sea lions went against the new Ozempic trend and all were modeling ample figures.

We were informed that they were deliberately fattened up to accommodate the fact that there may be an adjustment period and they might not secure food immediately.

The return to their natural habitat was a marvelous sight to behold.

Humans banding together to do good is an embraceable moment in these tumultuous times.
