Jean-George Cooks Up A Mesmerizing Marketplace…

After more than eight years and $200 million Jean-George Vongerichten Seaport Market which took much longer to whip up than one of his stellar soufflés, is open for business.

Designed by Roman and Williams, the 53,000-square-foot marketplace houses six full-service restaurants, four bars, six counters, retail and private dining in the entirely overhauled historic Tin Building.

The Fulton Street Fish Market, previously located in the Tin Building and built in 1907, had been the most important wholesale fish market in the United States for well over a century, but the transition of fish deliveries from boats to trucks midcentury, followed by a four-alarm fire in 1995 set by an arson, accelerated the building’s decline.

A decade later, the fish market relocated to Hunts Point in the Bronx.

Prior to Jean-George’s 100-year ground lease with the city, the historic building languished in disrepair.

The buildout was daunting. The ambitious plan included securing the building through reinforcing or replacing 200 concrete piles. The challenging task was performed by a specialized team of divers.

The building also needed to be moved back 32 feet, the foundation had to be restored and the building had to be raised six feet.

Now you can enjoy the admirable reconstruction, the delicious food offerings and a fabulous view.
