Ladies Who Lunch met up at the new restaurant in the MET Breuer on Madison Avenue.
Flora Bar takes over the space previously occupied by Danny Meyer’s, Untitled when the structure was home to the Whitney Museum.
Flora Bar is the third dining establishment from restaurateur Thomas Carter and chef Ignacio Mattos, the partners behind Estela and Café Altro Paradiso.
The food is eclectic, seafood-focused in a spare, lofty, modern space.
My companion was definitely not into the menu, but she was a good sport.
We began with a delicious Caesar Salad with outstanding parmesan cheese and a hint of citrus. It was a more generous serving size so we split the salad ($17).
We also shared the Lobster and Crab Dumplings in a yuzu broth. The dumplings were delicate and flavorful, the broth had a potent seafood essence ($29).
I glanced around and noticed the Tuna Tartare with potato and truffle ($22) and Snow Crab with yuzu kosho mayonnaise ($21).
Both were small portions.
Also on the menu a $95 Seafood Platter, Lamb Ribs with yogurt ($22), Halibut with wild mushrooms ($30) and Steak with Bearnaise and potatoes ($33).
The bread portion was meager, but tasty.
Bread is a pricey commodity these days and many restaurants are now charging.
Many people balk at this although with the gluten epidemic and the just say No to carbs campaign it is a cost saving move for many establishments to offer bread as a side dish.
Some of the breads such as the offering at Wildair are well worth the added $4 charge.
I did not sample a wide range of the menu.
My recommendation is to dine at Flora Bar on an expense account or roam the museum and then visit Flora Bar for cocktails and an appetizer.
Super models can dine at Flora guilt free.
If you do visit the MET Breuer and prefer not to dine, try Flora Coffee where they serve beverages, pastries and sandwiches.
