His vision of reality was selective, predominantly encompassing the streets of New York City and solitary people in commonplace settings.

While he is widely known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker, composing many trade and magazine covers.

Hopper created subdued drama out of commonplace subjects, inviting narrative interpretations.

His career benefited decisively from his marriage to fellow artist Josephine Nivison who contributed much to his work, both as a model and as a creative partner.

Hooper was interested in the psychological aspects of life and, at times, his melancholic paintings touch the viewing public where they are most vulnerable.
