I was searching this past weekend for escapism from reality and the extreme cold.
The 13 Oscar nominations for the film, Emilia Perez, peaked my curiosity.
The movie which is on Netflix, is a bold, surreal, musical pseudo opera set in a hyper-stylized vision of Mexico.
Emilia Perez tells a fantastical story of redemption and identity, centered around Karla Sofía Gascón’s compelling performance as Manitas, a feared drug lord transitioning into a new life as a philanthropist while grappling with guilt and a longing for acceptance.
The cast is outstanding and while the film’s musical sequences aim for emotional resonance, some may find the soundtrack repetitive and less impactful.
Emilia Perez challenges social norms. The film’s critical acclaim is notable, yet its across the board appeal may vary.
Emilia Perez’ intensity and melodrama may not be the escapism some might crave.
As creative as it is, perhaps I would have been better served watching, The Housewives along with the NFL divisional playoffs…a lighter reprieve in a year already heavy with stark realities.
