I am delighted to announce that my foodar is still intact.
Returning to Los Angeles from NYC’s food mecca I perused the list of new entries onto the L.A. restaurant scene.
I was strangely attracted to Norah. I reserved just in time. Apparently, they are already booked one month in advance.
On the anointed evening, we drove to West Hollywood. It was the first weekend of Coachella so traffic wasn’t terrible.
I don’t love that particular stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard, but Norah is a very attractive addition.
Once the patio opens Norah will be a tough get. Right now, artistic cows are grazing in the backyard.
International restaurateur Rohan Talwar and chef Mike Williams, formerly of Tipple & Brine in Sherman Oaks, are the team behind Norah.
The Thomas Schoos-designed space is a beam-to-tail retrofitting of the former Don’t Tell Mama nightclub space on Santa Monica Boulevard.
So, let’s get to the important stuff…food.
Other than Jenifer Lopez and an anorexic reality star the crowd was young and exuberant.
I rarely look to Yelp for guidance because I am a firm believer that all Yelp reviewers are 40-something men who are loners living in their mother’s basement, playing video games and masturbating.
I succumbed because I knew very little about the restaurant and craved a bit of direction.
One positive was that multiple reviewers raved about server, Annie.
Well, lo and behold, Annie was ours and she was lovely and on point with all her recommendations.
Annie has hidden talents. She is a roller derby queen in her other life.
Let’s get rollin’.
We started with a wonderful sparkling rose ($14) for me and a seductive saki Namazake ($10) for Mr. Devil.
We sipped them along with delicious Kusshi oysters from Canada adorned with green apple and scallion kimchi (4 for $14).
A delectable shaved asparagus and arugula salad followed with charred Meyer lemon, mushrooms, parmesan and fried capers which kicked the salad ($15).
The uni poached shrimp was amazing. It was prepared with smoked tomato, scallions and cilantro ($19).
We shared a main…a wonderful wood grilled swordfish with tomato sauce, smashed fingerlings and salsa verde ($29).
We went rogue and finished the meal off with an item from the ‘First’ section, cast iron cornbread with rosemary honey butter ($8). It was piping hot and all that.
Norah is a 10…fabulous food, decor and service.
Norah 8279 Santa Monica Boulevard West Hollywood, California. Open daily 5:30pm-Midnight. Street parking which can be challenging. Reservations on OpenTable.com.
