Biker Babe and her Motorcycle Man strike again. This weekend we hopped on our vintage Indian motorcycle and cruised the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu.
For 2 years we have passed the Malibu Lagoon and always mention that we have to explore the area. This was the day. Dedicated volunteers were planting and restoring the wetlands. A great deal of work has been done on the pathways and the wetlands will eventually look fabulous and be a coveted destination.
It appears to be a popular surfing area, hugging the coastline next to the landmark Malibu Pier. The beach is adjacent to the prestigious Malibu Colony where celebrities and industry executives are a dime a dozen.
We strolled the beachfront, taking in every conceivable type of architecture…rich people display questionable taste in the Colony. We clocked a few miles and enjoyed the sound of waves crashing and no signs of humanity.
We revved our engine and headed up the highway to Paradise Cove. We arrived by 9:00 am and were able to secure a lovely table outside at the Paradise Cove Beach Cafe with a full on view of the ocean.
We always start with a cup of coffee and they serve it in style with and a side of freshly whipped cream and a pirouline, a rolled wafer lined with dark chocolate.
The extensive breakfast menu features waffles ($12.95), pancakes, 3 egg omelettes served with breakfast potatoes, bread, English muffin or bagel ($13.95). I often order, The Leo, with house smoked salmon, caramelized onions and scrambled eggs ($12.95). Traditional eggs Benedict is also a popular item ($16.95, 3 more variations available).
David ordered 2 scrambled eggs with whole wheat toast and well done breakfast potatoes ($10.95). I went rogue and ordered off the menu… avocado toast ($8.95).
The lunch menu features their award-winning clam chowder (cup $6.95, bowl $10.95), salads, sandwiches, burgers and chicken breast (all priced @$16.95) . Dinner entrees include, steamed mussels ($25.95) coconut shrimp ($27.95), 2 lbs. of steamed clams ($29.95) and live Maine lobster (market price).
After a great breakfast, we always walk several miles on the beach ringed by rugged bluffs and lovely homes hovering above, decorated with tidepools, secret caves and a pier. Bring a book and sit on the beach. Traditional wooden chairs with straw umbrellas are scattered in front of the restaurant and it is first come first served (free).
Paradise Cove Beach Cafe restaurant has been a staple at Paradise Cove for years and the setting for classic movies and TV shows as Gidget, American Pie 2, Charlie’s Angels, Indecent Proposal, Baywatch and The Rockford Files.
Take a ride up PCH. Enjoy a delightful American style breakfast and stay for the day, taking in the peace and quiet and splendor of Paradise Cove.
