Some birthdays call for cake. Others call for cake and candlelight by the harbor, a wedge salad with flair and divine fresh seafood.
This year, my husband and daughter pulled out all the stops and treated me to dinner at Intrepid, the elegant culinary jewel tucked inside the iconic Hamilton Princess & Beach Club in Bermuda.
Let’s begin with the atmosphere.
Intrepid is perched right on the water, offering cinematic views of Hamilton Harbour that feel plucked from a Bond film which is more than fitting.
This isn’t just a dining room with a view. It’s a suave, stylish space named in honor of Intrepid, the WWII codename of British spy Sir William Stephenson said to be the real-life inspiration for none other than James Bond himself.
Dinner here comes stirred, not shaken.
The real seduction? The food.
We started with a Wedge Salad, expertly chopped tableside by our delightful server, Ashley, who managed to make Romaine, crispy Bacon and Blue Cheese feel like performance art. Dressed with precision and humor. Ashley was part server, part salad whisperer ($24).
Next came the Intrepid Roll, a house specialty that is bold in flavor and refined in execution. This roll combines sweet lobster, crunchy shrimp tempura, asparagus, all wrapped in perfectly seasoned rice and topped with a delicate drizzle of spicy mayo. It’s the kind of sushi roll that turns heads and tastes great, not fancy minus the flavor ($26).
For the main course, I shared the Branzino with my daughter. It was the Catch of the Day. The fish was perfectly pan-seared, crispy on the outside, buttery within ($49).
The Branzino was paired with Potato Gratin, the kind that dreams and second helpings are made of…creamy, layered and unapologetically rich ($16).
A side of earthy sautéed Mushrooms added depth along with delectable edamame and peas.
My husband ordered the Miso Glazed Organic Salmon over rice, sauteed to a gentle blush in the center ($47).
And then came dessert. A multi-layered tall, lush 007 Chocolate Cake. Each bite was rich, luxurious and quite possibly what heaven tastes like if it were made of ganache ($16).
Let us not forget the Hamilton Princess, known affectionately as the Pink Palace. She opened her grand pink doors in 1885, named in honor of Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria.
Today, the Princess pairs timeless elegance with modern sophistication, museum quality artwork and houses a restaurant that would make even 007 put down his martini.
If you’re heading to Bermuda and want a meal that is equal parts celebration and waterside fantasy, Intrepid is your spot.
