Days in New York City are endlessly entertaining.
Last weekend, we dispensed with the bikes and when by foot, through Central Park, down 5th Avenue with a respite in Bryant Park and ultimately landing at the Public Theatre on Lafayette in lower Manhattan.
We made a tasty detour at a new restaurant, Rocky Slims, on the corner of 3rd Avenue and 25th Street.
It is an adorable pizza joint, serving gourmet pizzas, pasta and salads.
We settled in outside on a gorgeous afternoon and ordered the endive salad with pecorino, walnuts and grapes. It was delicious and refreshing.
We then selected the veggie pizza with celery root, caramelized onion, fennel, mozzarella, thyme with a sesame seed crust. It was baked to perfection in the wood fired brick oven ($14).
Chef Angelo Romano, who started at Lupo, helped develop the food at Roberta’s for more than two years and if you haven’t been, make the trek to Roberta’s in Bushwick. It is worth the trip.
From there we walked to the Public Theater to catch Anne Hathaway in the remarkable play, Grounded.
First, we stopped for a marvelous iced cappuccino at La Colombe Coffee Roasters, a charming coffee bar at the corner of Layafette and West 4th Street.
We sat at the bar and chatted with a very talented young man, Eddie, who is destined for greatest in the music biz. I actually received a lovely email from him, complimenting me on my blog. The company and the ambiance contributed to making it a memorable cup of coffee.
We then scampered to the intimate Anspacher Theater inside the Public Theatre to catch Academy Award winner, Anne Hathaway, star in George Brant’s one woman spellbinding, ripped-from-the-headlines play, Grounded.
Anne inhabits the persona of an ace high flying fighter pilot who is reassigned, after becoming pregnant, to man remote-controlled drones. She faces twelve-hour shifts hunting targets from an Air Force trailer outside Las Vegas.
She then returns to domesticity, driving the hour to her husband and daughter tucked away in their suburban home.
Grounded involves the complicated consequences of waging war without leaving home, living in two unrelated, parallel universes.
Grounded is masterfully directed by two-time Tony Award winner, Julie Taymor of The Lion King fame.
Hathaway is spellbinding. The sets are equally impressive and evocative.
If you have the opportunity, Grounded is a must see. The play runs through May 24th.
We hiked home through Washington Square Park, enjoying every minute of another remarkably fun and stimulating New York City day.
