4th Fun, Frivolity & Food…

Spectacular Staycation.

No TSA and being a member of the 3 million passenger club passing through security yesterday,  no flight delays, no turbulence, no spending outrageous amounts of  money on jacked up airfares.

My July 4th long weekend provided daily electrifying fireworks.

The family kicked things off Wednesday with a 5th Avenue retail therapy adventure and then recharged at a stellar dinner at the pinky’s up Polo Bar conveniently located on 5th Avenue.

A host meets you outside the restaurant. If you have not reserved then you are out of luck. You enter a classic bar area and proceed to the host stand. The bar is long and narrow with a few seats across from the bar.

You then gracefully descend the elegant staircase and meet the effusively charming maitre D’.

It’s amazing that you are seated in a below ground windowless room and yet you feel incredibly comfortable.

If you are all about well prepared high quality American fare then you must reserve at Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar.

After a scrumptious dinner consisting of Caesar Salad, a classic Hamburger, a delicate Chicken Paillard and delectable Branzino along with a savory gift from our terrific server, the Ralph’s Classic Corned Beef Sandwich on outrageous marble rye bread, we headed to see the hottest show on Broadway.

Oh, Mary! is hysterically and creatively outrageous and if you have a demented sense of humor, Oh, Mary! is a must see.

Oh, Mary! is at its core a dark comedy starring the incredibly wacky and talented Cole Escola as a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln, taking place in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

The 4th dawned sunny, hot and humid. We headed to a day game at Yankee Stadium along with thousands of others.

The outing was fun, the Yankees sucked and lost to the Cincinnati Reds. We had stellar $35 tickets thankfully in the shade. We met a lovely, recently engaged couple from Cincinnati on the crowded subway platform. Hope your Birthday celebration was absolutely amazing, Kristi!

Friday we drove an hour to Storm King Art Center, a 500-acre outdoor museum located in New York’s Hudson Valley, where you experience large-scale sculpture displayed on verdant rolling hills. The first Friday of every month is free. An added bonus was our steps surpassed 8,000.

From there we took the winding roads through the idyllic countryside to charming Kent, Connecticut.

We enjoyed a Kale Caesar and Mushroom Pizza at Swyft and then strolled the Main Street and enjoyed homemade chocolates at  45 On Main.

Saturday was killer hot and humid so we spent the morning spinning and bingeing the controversial third season of, The Bear.

Saturday was another scorcher. We sensibly nixed walking to Broadway and took a Lyft  to see a matinee of Suffs. The musical relates the long and arduous struggle of women in the United States and their tortuous, frustrating journey to finally earn the right to vote.

The musical earnestly and admirably explores the events leading up to the ratification of the 19th amendment of the United States Constitution.

I enjoyed it to a point. It is an old fashioned musical and while timely it could have been more aggressively entertaining and rousing. A necessity for me after attending a Broadway musical is to depart with a specific song in my heart…no such luck.

Dinner was amazing. My daughter unearthed an outstanding, affordable Omakase restaurant on 44th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. A desirable theater district restaurant is highly unattainable. Review to follow.

The heatwave continued into Sunday. We took a very early morning Central Park walk, stopping to share a sable and nova platter at the iconic Barney Greengrass.

The walk home was challenging. We settled into AC and watched Wimbledon and then treated ourselves to a spa mani/pedi

What a remarkably entertaining and action packed staycation.
