We ventured to Venice last weekend and hung out at the Brig which has been on Abbott Kinney Boulevard for 30 years…when Abbott Kinney wasn’t trendy and pricey.
The occasion was the going away celebration for my daughter who is being transferred to NYC to stir it up in the greatest city in the world.
We partied with the happening movers and shakers in the television biz.
We departed the gathering after 11pm and we were hungry.
There aren’t many late night choices in West Los Angeles.
I had read about a brand new place located in our old stomping grounds, on the border between Venice and Marina Del Rey.
5 minutes later we were on Washington Boulevard just above the Venice pier at Nighthawk: Breakfast Bar, a bar that serves late-night breakfast until 1am with an expanded menu of sweet and boozy creations.
The bar was busy. We settled into a table and perused the breakfast heavy menu.
David opted for Nighthawk Breakfast Sandwich without the house-made bacon sausage.
The sandwich included scrambled eggs, gruyere cheese, arugula, peppercorn aioli and champagne vinaigrette on a pretzel roll ($14).
It was delicious, eggs fluffy and the aioli enhanced the flavor.
I opted for the Big Bird & Shortstack. It was the best fried chicken I have had since my Ethel made it for me weekly when I was growing up.
The buttermilk fried chicken was crispy, moist and delectable, the sweet potato pancakes were light and flavorful and it came with a spicy gojuchang butter and maple syrup ($16).
Owner Jeremy Fall, the 25-year-old L.A. native, recently shuttered his Nighthawk Hollywood restaurant and is putting his energy into the new Nighthawk along with several other ventures.
Nighthawk is decorated in dark woods, striped fabric booths and vintage globe light fixtures.
The food menu, helmed by Spago alum Chef Greg Schroeppel, lists items such as a breakfast banh-mi bowl, foie gras, Benedict fries, duck confit hash, an award-winning breakfast burger, homemade brandy-infused french toast and chicken & biscuits.
The cocktail list includes spiked cereal milks, a slushy Bloody Mary, boozy floats and alcoholic coffee drinks.
Nighthawk is a sophisticated, tempting version of the the late night places you were drawn to in college after an evening of revelry.
It is a cozy hangout with very good food.
It could become my own personal Cosmos.
