My daughter has mastered the art of retail therapy.
The other day she introduced me to a legitimate Made In America, high quality product.
You need to know about Shinola.
I cracked up when she lead me to the free standing store at The Grove in West Hollywood.
When I was growing up, we thought we were so cool saying, “You don’t know shit from Shinola.”
I had no idea what it meant, but the ability to say shit without getting my mouth washed out with soap was so very appealing.
It turns out that Shinola was shoe polish.
Here’s the back story: An officer in the Army demanded that one of his underlings shine his shoes daily.
One of the grunts couldn’t handle the degradation and polished his superior’s shoes with shit.
The officer bragged about the shine on his shoes and the private couldn’t help himself and spoke up, “You don’t know shit from Shinola!”
Unlike the colloquialism, the Shinola store is elegant, spotlighting the classic timepieces made in Detroit as well as the tasteful leather products also crafted and manufactured in the good ‘ole U.S. of A.
The staff is very welcoming, accommodating and well-versed in the Shinola products and back story.
They even sell made in America bicycles that range in price from $100 to $5000.
Each Shinola bicycle undergoes a precise, custom-level assembly by experts in their Detroit store where they properly build a bicycle.
One bike is built at a time, by hand, using the highest quality components.
Courtny, not being a biking enthusiast, purchased a gorgeous watch.
She is in good company as President Clinton is a big fan.
President Obama recently presented a custom Shinola to Great Britian Prime Minister, David Cameron.
Shinola’s goal is to bring manufacturing jobs back to America, especially to hard hit Detroit.
They build goods to last.
The Shinola watch factory is housed in the College For Creative Studies in Detroit.
The company was started by former Fossil founder, Tom Kartsotis.
The name is a nod to the shoe polish company that was created in 1877 and disappeared in 1960.
Shinola is a company to be proud of.
That is what makes America great…trumped again.
