Blackbird Buy Buy…

black-bird-2

I am a Broadway babe.

Other than the joy I receive from my family, travel and intermittent satisfaction from the NY Giants, Yankees and Syracuse Orange basketball wins, nothing thrills me as much as a fabulous Broadway show.

This past week I took in three amazing plays…The Humans, Eclipsed and most recently, Blackbird.

Blackbird, starring Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams, was painful, poignant and riveting.

Daniels and Williams were unbelievable…such range and realism.

Cut to the chase…was it love or was it statutory rape?

That is the question that permeates the 90 minutes of holding your breath and squirming in your seat.

Blackbird was written in 2005 by Scottish playwright, David Harrower. It was inspired in part by the crimes of sex offender Toby Studebaker and depicts a 27 year-old woman confronting a man fifteen years after being sexually abused by him when she was twelve.

The power base keeps shifting and the ending is shocking.

Blackbird is a tour de force.

When the play ended the audience jumped to their feet.

I needed to collect myself before giving a much deserved Standing O.

Blackbird originally debuted on Broadway in 2007. Joe Mantello also directed the first run starring Jeff Daniels and Alison Pill.

A film adaptation of the play titled, Una, is set for a 2016 release. The film stars Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn.

We left and walked to the village, feeling the need to expend energy and decompress.

The subject matter is daunting, but this is great theater.

See Blackbird.
