Royals is a great single.

I love it…clearly everyone does since it held the #1 chart position for nine weeks and the song has sold 5,467,000 digital copies in the U.S.

Lorde

It has been in constant rotation for months and won the Grammy for Song of the Year. The New Zealand singer/songwriter wrote Royals when she was only 15 years-old.

And we’ll never be Royals…we all assumed it was about the Royal family. Who isn’t obsessed with the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and the new royal baby, Prince George? (ok, not everyone, but a huge majority)

Never assume anything. The song is about the greatest Royals of them all, George Brett.

Last year, Lorde told VH1 that she wrote the song after being inspired by a photo of Kansas City Royals baseball star, George Brett, signing baseballs in a 1976 issue of National Geographic….apparently, Lorde collected vintage National Geographics.

“I’d been kind of thinking about writing that song for a while and been pulling together a couple little lines here and there, and I had this image from the National Geographic of this dude signing baseballs,” Lorde said.  “He was a baseball player and his shirt said Royals. I was like, I really like that word, because I’m a big word fetishist. I’ll pick a word and I’ll pin an idea to that.”

When Lorde played in Kansas City, Brett sent her an autographed baseball shirt, but she never had the opportunity to meet the man who inspired her smash hit until this week.

Wednesday, Major League Baseball tweeted a photo of them in Las Vegas, before Lorde’s concert. Lorde said it was one of her greatest honors.

I had the pleasure of meeting George Brett in the 80’s. I was Huey Lewis and the News publicist. Huey and I always bonded over our love of sports. Huey was actually a very good baseball player and was offered a full baseball scholarship to Cornell, which he briefly attended until Elvis Costello and Clover came calling.

At every opportunity I connected the sports dots. (Remember the Sports album…huge home run). I used to hook Huey and the News up with sports greats in many of the touring cities.

Athletes are always dying to hang with rock stars and aspire to perform on yet another major stage. Brett presented Huey with the key to Kansas City when the band played there.

George Brett is baseball royalty. He is also a hell of a nice man as is Huey…I always felt that Brett and Lewis shared similar rugged good looks.

Now Lorde is baseball Royalty and Brett will always be Royals.

Have a majestic day and listen to Royals:
