Super Sunday…

My Super Bowl challenge commenced Saturday at 4am.

A championship was not on the line, but I had to rise up.

After 11 days in bed, I had to get my sick butt out of bed and get to the airport.

Obligations had to be met so in 20 degree temps I headed to JFK.

The convenience of first flight out is obvious.

We made it to the airport in 30 minutes and missed the demonstrations over the pathetic Trump travel ban by 2 hours.

The airport was rocking at 5:30am.

Surprisingly, our flight was empty and I had an entire row to myself, permitting myself to rant and rave over the Syracuse University men’s basketball team victory over nemesis and 9th ranked University of Virginia.

Took Lyft home as I am boycotting Uber and the ride was less than the competition.

Watts Towers

Still breathing, my Super Sunday started with an 8am journey to South Central Los Angeles to see the Watts Towers…this site has been on my bucket list for a long time.

Watts Towers

Hard to believe the enduring, iconic structure is on a narrow, short one way street.

The Watts Towers are a collection of 17 interconnected sculptural structures and 100,000 ornamental fragments.

The tallest of the towers reaches a height of over 99 feet.

The towers and walls were designed and built by Simon Rodia (1879-1965), an Italian immigrant construction worker and tile mason, over a period of 33 years, from 1921 to 1954.

Rodia used many different materials including volcanic rock, tile, bottle glass, pottery shards, seashells, glazed tiles and concrete.

From there we drove to the trendy Arts District along a boulevard that looked like the apocalypse had struck…it was bleak and strewn with abandoned factories and barb wire.

Outstanding restaurants Bestia, Factory Kitchen and Church & State used to stand alone in the sparsely populated area…no longer.

The Arts District is facing a renaissance of sorts with stores and restaurants sprouting up.

Sqirl

We ended our journey at the acclaimed Sqirl Restaurant in Silver Lake.

Time arrived for Super Bowl LI without my much preferred headliners, the NY Giants.

In my humble opinion there were 2 losers, the Falcons and Lady Gaga who was boring and the wrong performer for that demographic.

Her body rocked, though.

I’ll take Springsteen anytime.

Among the winners, Patriot quarterback, Tom Brady, crawls into bed after the Super Bowl with wife Giselle Bundchen.

Adriana Lima, Julian Edelman

Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola gets to scrimmage with former Miss Universe 2012, overrated actress and model, Olivia Culpo (Nick Jonas’ former girlfriend).

Patriots offensive players sure know how to catch the babes.

Atlanta Falcons Wide Receiver Julio Jones

The Falcons may have lost, but running back, Devonta Freeman, gets his well earned recognition as does superstar receiver, Julio Jones.

Kyle Shanhan, Mike Shanahan

Former head coach Mike Shanahan’s little boy, Kyle, receives accolades for being the Falcons impressive offensive coordinator and probably the next head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Even after an overtime loss, Falcon’s quarterback gets to play one on one with his wife Sarah Marshall Ryan, former Boston College basketball star.

Bill Belichick

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, probably the only head coach equal to the legendary Vince Lombardi, still gets to dress like a 10 year-old boy while banking millions and earning the distinction of being the only head coach to win the Super Bowl 5 times.

And, the biggest winner is, Tom Brady, who without a doubt, has the most perfect life of anyone on the face of the earth.

It was indeed a Super Sunday.

  1. You left out the facts that both Belichick and Brady have both been found guilty of very serious offenses! I find it’ offensive’ that they won- it is like rewarding evil!!! i don’t think Vince Lombardy would like to be mentioned in the same sentence as a man who feels that he needs a winning edge by secretly video taping other teams . So it is it a further award that they bed with ‘babes’ I see that they are in bed with the Devil- no pun intended.

    • I admire your stand. I didn’t know you were so passionate about Brady and Belichick.
If you adhere to the law of the land, they were both found guilty and punished, but morally you are absolutely right.
But again, in the words of the legendary coach Vince Lombardi,
“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.”
That is what our culture is all about especially in the present age of Entitlement and Narcissism…AKA Trump Presidency.
