Fun Facts & Friday Reflections…

Happy-Friday

Reflective Friday…It has been a joyous week in so many ways.

My husband and I celebrated 30 wondrous years together, my mother is finally rebounding, Madison is easing into her role as solo doggie in the home, the Yankees won, ending their 4 game losing streak and the painters and flooring workers wrapped up and vacated the premises after the last carnage.

The only bummer is a really negative force field at our beloved Co-op in NY. We live with the fear of Noah’s Ark revisiting our place on a daily basis. We have been ignored by the Board like a bunch of pagans in the holy land. We are fighting an uphill battle against a particularly evil source.

Community is so important. We love the street on which we live.

Yesterday, I ran into an employee of the company that is located in our neighborhood. I have frequently complimented him on working hard to keep the ‘hood tidy. He ran up and hugged me, saying that he missed seeing me and that I am a “light in his life.”

Soon after, I was running in the Park and ran into my pal, William. He has worked for the Central Park Conservancy for a long time. He is a lovely gentleman from the Islands and takes his work seriously. We have become friends over the years. We embraced and he said he missed our encounters. He has been promoted and his responsibilities lie in other parts of the Park.

I ran away feeling elated. It is so nice to know honest, kind people much unlike the negative force in my building. I know it is Pollyanna-ish, but it takes so little to be positive and so much energy to be evil. Pass is forward, God damn it and let’s put an end to the terrible, entitled people who ruin it for all the good peeps.

I will step down from my pulpit and dish up some Fun Facts.

1. Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism changed its name several years back to accommodate the theater of the absurd: Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.

There is new reason to poke fun at the name. There are misspellings on the 2014 diplomas given out to new graduates.

The word “integrated” is missing a letter. I graduated from the Newhouse School of Journalism. There is always banter about which is the best journalism school, Newhouse or Medill. Now we know. Newhouse would never publish without proofing!

2. Starbucks and shopping…they now go hand in hand at the Uniglo store on 5th Avenue in New York City. It’s a trip to step onto the 3rd level at Uniglo and find a Starbucks nestled among the standing racks of t-shirts…people are grazing and sipping at 666 Fifth Avenue, NYC.

3. Rockefeller Center has a new centerpiece…all 37 feet and 50,000 flowers of it. It’s Jeff Koons’ Split-Rocker, a mammoth topiary the Public Art Fund unveiled Wednesday at 30 Rock, right where the Christmas tree usually stands.

Inspired by his son’s rocking horse and a toy dinosaur, Koons melded the two heads into one Picasso-like asymmetrical whole with handles protruding from each side. Live begonias, geraniums, petunias and more dot the sculpture, watered by an irrigation system within the stainless-steel armature…definitely worth a drive by.

Koon’s first New York museum retrospective opens today at the Whitney Museum of Art, 945 Madison Avenue. Visit the Whitney Museum soon as a new, modern home is being built at the southern entrance of the High Line in the Meatpacking district. Designed by Renzo Piano, it is scheduled to open in 2015.

4. The Yankee captain, Derek Jeter, turned 40 yesterday…hard to believe since he was 21 years-old when he started playing for the Yankees. He will be dearly missed when he retires after this season…Happy Birthday, Derek.

5. Ann Coulter strikes again…perhaps she was hit in the head with a soccer ball.

“Soccer is destroying the USA.”  So says conservative syndicated columnist Ann Coulter. Coulter went on a rant about the sport, calling it un-American in a column Wednesday headlined, “America’s Favorite National Pastime: Hating Soccer.”

She also says soccer is not a “real sport.” A real sport, she argues, requires individual achievement and “the prospect of either personal humiliation or major injury.”

This is my favorite…”Liberal moms like soccer because it’s a sport in which athletic talent finds so little expression that girls can play with boys. No serious sport is co-ed, even at the kindergarten level.”

You just can’t fix stupid.

And so it goes…have a Fab Friday…until Monday, have a Devil of a good weekend.

  1. Paula Lopez says:

I am left aghast at the Coulter ‘rant’— I didn’t think it was possible to dislike her more- but that just adds proof to the adage- never say never!

  2. As a technologically challenged person, I don’t really know how to get onto your mailing list bandwagon beside commenting and inputting my name and email info and checking these nice tidy boxes below, sooo…

Comment it is! (Tbh, I didn’t actually read your entire post, but did the entertaining tidbit about Anne Coulter striking again (great pic, btw! very eyecatching ;)) so I can’t actually make any intelligent comment(s) about this, and now I’m rambling again about how much I can’t say and it’s really late and I should actually be doing my homework, but here I am anyway, hahaha)
