Diane Von Furstenberg married into royalty…I just happened to marry a Prince not ordained by royal appointment.

Just a moment of your time to provide a glimpse into my Valentine’s Day which was fit for a Princess…flowers, breakfast in bed, 90-minute amazing spa massage, Veuve Cliquot champagne and a romantic dinner with wine pairings, overlooking the Pacific Ocean  in Malibu.

Gosh, after almost 30 years I am still madly in love with my husband…who knew. I was never without a man interested in me and had 5 proposals of marriage before my one and only (she said modestly), but I only blog the truth. I guess my first round draft choice stuck and we have been a united, cohesive winning team ever since.

Saturday I had a date with my sweetie to see the Diane Von Furstenberg retrospective at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art).

‘Journey of a Dress’ is bold and beautiful. There are 100’s of wrap dresses on display and a narcissistic, but entertaining array of paintings, portraits and photographs of the Princess.

The title may be moot now since she divorced Prince Egon of Furstenberg in 1972. Today, Diane Von Furstenberg  is married to corporate royalty in the form of Barry Diller.

DVF’ had an idea back in the 1970’s for a drip-dry, cotton jersey that wrapped in front and tied at the waist in abstract prints and vivid colors. Women felt like royalty wearing the wrap.

They felt empowered in the workplace and traveled the world looking groovy, dressed like a real life Princess. In the darkened confines of homes and hotels, they harkened back to the old days and hand washed their perfect little dress.

It was a dress suited to the single, provocative woman, no assistance required…no zippers or unreachable buttons or snaps. Don’t get me wrong, this is a dress for every age and body type. In fact, the DVF wrap dress was sold as an exclusive line for Gap Kids and my grandmother looked pretty nifty in it, as well.

Alas, the Princess moved on and the wrap was a wrap until 1997 when DVF roared back with new colors, patterns and fabrics and the wrap is ‘where it’s at’, once again.

This year the wrap turned 40 and is looking better than ever…after all, 40 is the new 20!

As Lorde sings, “And we’ll never be royals”, but you will have a Wale of a time at the Diane Von Furstenberg retrospective. Get there before April 1st when it’s a wrap.
